Why Everyone Loves Honeycrisp Apples
/There are apples—and then there are Honeycrisp apples.
If you’ve ever bitten into a really good Honeycrisp, you probably understand the obsession. That first bite is incredibly crisp, juicy and satisfying, with just the right balance of sweetness and tartness. It’s the kind of apple that makes you stop and say, “Wow, that’s a good apple.”
And yes, we know a good apple when we taste one.
A Newer Apple That Quickly Became a Favorite
Honeycrisp is actually a relatively young apple variety. It was developed by the University of Minnesota and officially released in 1991. Since then, it has helped change what people expect from a fresh apple. University of Minnesota researchers describe the variety as prized for its combination of sweetness, tartness, juiciness and its signature crisp texture.
That crispness is really what sets Honeycrisp apart.
Unlike an apple that simply feels firm when you bite into it, Honeycrisp has a distinctive texture that gives way with a satisfying crunch. The cells of the apple break apart as you bite, releasing all that delicious juice.
It's no surprise that Honeycrisp became a benchmark for apple breeders. Today, University of Minnesota researchers still use Honeycrisp as a standard when evaluating new apple varieties, particularly for flavor, crispness and juiciness.
So, What Makes a Honeycrisp So Good?
The crunch.
This is probably Honeycrisp's most famous characteristic. It's exceptionally crisp and juicy, making it especially good for eating fresh.
The flavor.
Honeycrisp isn't simply sweet. Its appeal comes from the balance between sweetness and acidity, giving it a bright, refreshing flavor rather than a one-dimensional sugary taste.
The juiciness.
Take a big bite and you'll understand. Honeycrisps are famously juicy, which makes them a favorite for snacking.
The versatility.
While they're especially wonderful eaten right out of your hand, Honeycrisps can also be sliced into salads, paired with cheese, added to sandwiches or used in baking. They also have the added benefit of being relatively slow to brown after they're cut.
Honeycrisp at Nourse Farm
We don't grow Honeycrisp apples here at Nourse Farm—but that doesn't mean we don't think they belong in our farm store!
During apple season, we bring in Honeycrisp apples from Restoration Orchard in Harvard and Townsend, Massachusetts. Restoration Orchard is a New England family-owned orchard with nearly 5,000 apple trees, including Honeycrisp, Gala and Ginger Gold.
And we're pretty particular about what we bring into the store.
These Honeycrisps are delicious—crisp, juicy and packed with that sweet-tart flavor that has made this variety one of America's favorite apples.
We love being able to offer our customers produce from other Massachusetts farms and orchards when it complements what we're growing here at Nourse Farm. It's another way to support local agriculture while giving you access to an even greater variety of what's grown right here in our region.
The Perfect Fall Apple
Honeycrisp has become almost synonymous with fall. Pack one in a lunchbox, slice one up for an afternoon snack, put it on a cheese board or simply grab one from the fruit bowl and take a bite.
No recipe required.
And honestly, that's one of the reasons we love them so much.
Sometimes the best way to enjoy a really good apple is to eat it exactly as it is.
